COMING APRIL 18, 2021
"Here I Stand" Sunday

500TH Anniversary of The Diet of Worms
(pronounced "DYE-it of VORMS")

Martin Luther posted his 95 Theses on the door of the Castle Church in Wittenberg on October 31, 1517.  By 1521 his movement to reform the Roman church had gained enough traction and notoriety that he was summoned to appear before the Council of the Holy Roman Emperor (AKA the Imperial Diet), which would meet in April 1521 in the city of Worms.

You can read about this event HERE>>.

Martin Luther was investigated by the Diet on April 16 and 17; on April 18 he was ready to make his official statement defending himself against charges brought against him.  You can read an English translation of that statement HERE>>.

Notice the final paragraph, which is Luther's response to the direct question about whether he would recant (take back) anything he had written, with the famous line "Here I stand; I cannot do otherwise; God help me!  Amen!"

HERE>> is more information about the observance of the 500th anniversary of this event on Sunday, April 18, 2021, by congregations in The Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod (including Christ the King!)

HERE>> is a dramatization from the 2003 movie "Martin Luther" featuring Joseph Fiennes in the title role

Here's an artist's rendition of the event.
